How to repair the edge of your belt

The edge of your belt is a very sensitive area that can be damaged easily. Since there is a lot of tension on the belt during its use, those little dents or notches can become cracks.

The Contibelt steel belt is delivered with perfectly rounded edges, which should look like this:

If an edge of the belt loses its edge treatment during use, it should be immediately retreated. Last week we told you that you should inspect the belt regularly to notice such damaged areas.

This week we show you how to get ride of these incisions yourself.
If you find this edge to be demolished in any way, please prepare the following:

Cut proof gloves
Auto Body file
Scotch Brite

Retreatment in this field is normally done by filing.
It is necessary to exercise caution so that the heat generated by filing is kept to a minimum. We recommend using sharp files with moderate pressure, continuously moving along the edge to be redressed.

Move in long strokes along the edge!

Let’s get started!

Put on the gloves, to not get hurt while repairing your belt edge.
Take the body file in both hands and move it in long straight strokes – rather than jabs – around the edge. Generally speaking, you’ll have to hold the file in such a way as to contact as much metal as possible. Try not to just go over the place with the crack, but over a longer area.

For testing if the problem is still there: move along the filed edge with your fingernail. If you still feel a little bump, you have not succeeded yet.

For final polishing use Scotch Brite. Gently rub the filed edge of the belt until it is smooth again.

Now you are good to go on producing your product on our steel belt.
